The use of personal devices in the classroom is a policy decision to be made by your organization. You must check with your organisation’s personal device and data security policies as some organisations do not allow the use of personal devices at work, or for recording.
See our example personal device policy here which covers the main considerations. These are:
- Loss/Damage/Theft of a personal recording device
- Use of a device where recordings are made outside of the IRIS Connect Record app
- How the use of personal mobile devices affect other policies that are already in place - such as bans on use within certain times/locations
An additional consideration is the lack of storage space on the recording device to capture the lesson. Typically some personal devices do not have the necessary storage space free for capturing a lesson. Further information on typical file size requirements can be found:

The IRIS Connect Record App
Due to the nature of how the IRIS Connect application is constructed, not only does it automatically upload and remove the recordings, but it encrypts the data that is temporarily stored on the device in such a way as to ensure that no one, not even the user themselves can access it. Only once the file has been uploaded is it decrypted on our servers.
Due to the unique way that this operates, it has been approved for use by many very security conscious organizations for use on personal devices.
Use of your own personal device in the classroom is for each individual to decide, considering the risk of the device getting broken, stolen, or tampered with.
Summary
Our app operates the same level of high-security process on all devices providing you use the IRIS Connect Record app, which is specifically designed to enable secure data capture and upload.
The Record app means that no one can view recordings locally (on the device before they are uploaded) as they are encrypted, automatically uploaded to your account and deleted from the device once the upload is complete.
