What are Tags?
Tags are a way of categorising your reflections. You can add multiple tags to reflections, for example: Best Practice, Year 9, and Math as 3 separate tags, which you could then filter by to sort your reflections.
You can add public tags (available for all users that you have chosen to share the reflection with to see/add to) and private tags (only for your reference).
Why Tag a Reflection?
Filtering your reflection by tags is a useful tool to search for reflections in your Reflections library. You can tag individual reflections with certain labels that relate to that observation. Reflections can then be filtered by a tag to quickly find particular reflections.
You can find your Reflections library by clicking the Reflections tab in the navigation pane on the left of your platform page. Here you will see all of the reflections that you have created and those that others have shared with you.
Once you have a collection of reflections, it can be useful to filter your library to view specific reflections. Filtering can be done by organisation (useful if you're in a wider network of schools/organisations), by user (to see all the clips that a certain colleague/s has shared with you), and by tag (to see reflections that have been labelled with a specific tag).
Using Tags
NOTE: When creating a tag, avoid the use of hashtags (#) and other symbols. They will cause the tag you created to be removed.
To tag a reflection, click the three horizontal line icon on the reflection in your Reflections library. Then click Tags.
Within this following menu, you can:
Change the permission of the public tags. (Only the owner of the reflection has the ability to change this permission. If you are looking at tags of a reflection that has been shared with you, you won't see this element.)
There are two options:
- Only you can add public tags. This means that it is only the owner of the reflection that can add public tags to the reflection which can be seen by all users that the reflection is shared with.
- All users can add public tags. This means that all users that the reflection is shared with can add and remove the public tags associated with it.
NOTE: If you change this permission, remember to click 'Update' to save the changes.
Type into the bar to add a tag. Click the tag in the list that appears as you type, or press the tab key on your keyboard to attach the tag to that reflection. To remove a tag, click on the 'x' that is to the left-hand side of it.
Public Tags and Private Tags
- Public Tags - visible to all users with access to the reflection.
- Private Tags - only visible to you.
In this example, the owner of the reflection has tagged the reflection: questioning, maths, and class discussion. Anyone who can access the reflection can filter and view these tags.
You can also add private tag that is only relevant to you.
NOTE: Be careful with your spelling and decide whether you will use spaces or capitalisation. If there is a difference (e.g. questioning, Questioning, questiong or classdiscussion, class discussion) they will register as separate tags and make the filter process less straightforward.
Tags on Shared Reflections
Once a reflection is shared with you, you can click the three horizontal line icon, then Tags, to view the existing tags.
You cannot add or remove any public tags since the owner of the Reflection set the permission to 'Only you can add public tags'.
You can, however, add your own private tags. You will have control over these and can add them to reflections shared with you to meet your own organisation and filtering needs. The owner of the reflection will not be able to see these as they are private to you.
Tagged Reflections
You will be able to see any tagged reflections by this icon in the top left corner of the thumbnail. The number in the icon denotes the number of tags that have been added.
In this example, as one public and one private tag were added, anyone who has the reflection shared with them will only see the one public tag. By clicking on the icon you can then see the tag:
They are then able to add their own private tags if they wish.
